Data protection and GDPR compliance has grown from an afterthought to a defined career path within Cyprus’s corporate sector over the past five years. While it lacks the profile of AML or financial compliance, the Data Protection Officer (DPO) role and adjacent data governance positions are in consistent demand and offer a clear professional career trajectory.
Why GDPR Compliance Is Growing in Cyprus
The GDPR has been in force across the EU since 2018, but the practical impact on Cyprus businesses accelerated from 2022 onwards as the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection increased its enforcement activity. Simultaneously, international businesses using Cyprus as a holding jurisdiction have had to ensure data flows and processing meet GDPR standards — creating demand for DPO services and in-house data protection expertise. Financial services firms regulated by CySEC are particularly active employers, given the volume of personal data they process.
What Roles Exist and What They Pay
The main roles are: Data Protection Officer (externally contracted or in-house), Data Governance Analyst, Privacy Counsel (for legal-background specialists) and Information Security/Privacy overlap roles. In-house DPO salaries range from €35,000–€60,000 depending on organisation size. External DPO services — providing DPO services to multiple organisations on a consultancy basis — can generate €50,000–€90,000 for experienced practitioners with a developed client base. Getting into Data Protection Professionally
The CIPP/E and CIPM certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals are the most widely recognised qualifications. Legal backgrounds are a strong advantage but the role is also accessible from IT, compliance and project management careers. Law firms in Cyprus actively seek solicitors with data protection knowledge — our law firm hiring guide covers this practice area in detail. The Ministry of Labour lists subsidised training programmes covering digital and compliance roles.
